The National Golden Bee Championship is conducted in four progressive stages, allowing contestants to advance based on merit and performance.
Each stage is professionally organised to identify outstanding spellers while maintaining the highest standards of fairness, transparency, and educational excellence.
Every participating contestant begins their journey at the school level and progresses through increasingly competitive rounds until the National Champion is crowned.
Mode: Written Assessment
The Championship begins with a written screening exercise conducted within participating schools using official National Golden Bee assessment materials.
The screening evaluates each contestant's spelling ability, vocabulary knowledge, language proficiency, and overall readiness for higher levels of competition.
Schools submit their highest-performing contestants to represent them at the State Championship.
Mode: Oral Spelling Competition
Qualified contestants from participating schools compete at their respective State Championship in professionally organised oral spelling competitions.
This stage is conducted before a live audience and professionally recorded for television broadcast, providing contestants with an opportunity to demonstrate both academic excellence and confidence on stage.
Outstanding contestants receive state recognition and qualify for the Regional Championship.
Mode: Oral Championship
State Champions advance to the Regional Championship, where they compete against the best contestants from neighbouring states.
This stage presents a higher level of competition, testing contestants' spelling accuracy, vocabulary development, pronunciation, composure, and analytical thinking under increased pressure.
Regional Champions earn the honour of representing their region at the National Grand Finale.
Mode: National Oral Championship
The National Grand Finale brings together the most outstanding young spellers from every region of Nigeria to compete for the highest honour in the Championship.
This prestigious event is professionally produced and nationally broadcast, celebrating academic excellence before educators, parents, government representatives, sponsors, media organisations, and distinguished guests.
Contestants compete through multiple championship rounds until one exceptional speller is crowned the National Golden Bee Champion.
To ensure fairness and age-appropriate competition, contestants compete within their respective academic levels.
The National Golden Bee Championship features four official competition categories.
Primary 1 – Primary 3
Designed to introduce young learners to competitive spelling while building confidence and foundational literacy skills.
Primary 4 – Primary 6
Focuses on expanding vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and strengthening reading comprehension.
JSS 1 – JSS 3
Introduces more advanced spelling patterns, etymology, vocabulary usage, and language analysis.
SSS 1 – SSS 3
The highest academic category, challenging contestants with sophisticated vocabulary, advanced word origins, and complex spelling patterns expected of exceptional young scholars.
Every contestant is assessed using clearly defined judging standards to ensure consistency, fairness, and transparency throughout the Championship.
Contestants must spell each word correctly and completely.
Correct spelling remains the primary criterion for determining progression throughout the competition.
Contestants are expected to pronounce words clearly and confidently before spelling them.

The official pronunciation provided by the Pronouncer shall be regarded as the authoritative pronunciation for the competition.
Contestants are encouraged to understand the origins, meanings, and language families of words.
A strong understanding of etymology often assists contestants in accurately spelling unfamiliar words.
In addition to spelling ability, contestants are expected to demonstrate composure, confidence, professionalism, and respect throughout the competition.
Judges observe contestants' ability to remain calm, communicate effectively, and perform confidently before an audience.
