About the Championship

The National Golden Bee Championship is one of Nigeria's fastest-growing literacy and academic excellence initiatives. Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love for reading while developing confident communicators and future leaders through healthy academic competition. The Championship is open to eligible pupils and students from public and private schools throughout Nigeria. Every contestant competes individually, regardless of the number of participants registered by the same school.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate in the National Golden Bee Championship, contestants must satisfy the following requirements:

✅ Be officially enrolled in a recognised Nigerian Primary or Secondary School.

✅ Register through their school or through an approved registration process.

✅ Provide accurate personal and school information.

✅ Meet the age and category requirements for their selected division.

✅ Comply with all Championship Rules and Regulations.

 

The Organising Committee reserves the right to verify contestant information and disqualify any participant found to have submitted false information or violated Championship rules.

Championship Categories

The Championship consists of four carefully structured competition categories.

Lower Primary

Primary 1–3

Recommended Age:

6–9 Years


Upper Primary

Primary 4–6

Recommended Age:

9–12 Years


Junior Secondary

JSS 1–3

Recommended Age:

10–13 Years


Senior Secondary

SSS 1–3

Recommended Age:

13–16 Years

Senior Secondary contestants must not be writing WAEC, NECO, UTME, or equivalent final examinations during the Championship year.

Registration Rules

Registration is completed through the Official National Golden Bee Registration Portal. Schools may register up to ten contestants per category. Registration becomes valid only after successful payment confirmation. Upon successful registration, each school receives a unique Championship Registration ID. Schools are advised to: Keep payment receipts. Confirm registration details. Regularly check their email and SMS notifications. Follow official announcements on the website. Only payments made through official National Golden Bee payment channels are recognised.

Championship Structure

The Championship is conducted in four progressive stages.

Stage One

School Screening

Official Written Assessment


Stage Two

State Championship

Live Oral Competition

Television Recording


Stage Three

Regional Championship

Top contestants compete against neighbouring states.


Stage Four

National Grand Finale

Nigeria's finest young spellers compete for national honours and prestigious awards.

Contest Format

Each stage consists of carefully structured assessment rounds.

Written Round

Contestants write the correct spelling of dictated words.

Corrections, overwriting, or alterations may invalidate answers.


Oral Rounds

Contestants spell words verbally before the audience and Officiating Panel.

Contestants are encouraged to study the Official Champions Study Guide while preparing beyond the published materials.


Indigenous Language Round

At selected National Championship stages, contestants may also spell approved words from Hausa, Igbo, or Yoruba.

This round promotes Nigeria's rich linguistic heritage.

 

Oral Spelling Rules

Contestants must: Listen carefully. Speak clearly. Spell confidently. Pronounce the completed word after spelling. Each contestant has 60 seconds to complete their spelling.

Every Contestant May Request

Before spelling, contestants may ask for:

✅ Re-pronunciation

✅ Definition

✅ Language of Origin

✅ Example Sentence

✅ Part of Speech

✅ Tense Form

✅ Alternate Pronunciation (where applicable)

✅ Clarification of Homonyms

Contestants are encouraged to use these resources before beginning to spell.

 

Once a contestant begins spelling, letters cannot be rearranged or withdrawn.

Judging & Adjudication

The National Golden Bee Championship follows internationally recognised spelling competition standards. Judging is based on: Spelling Accuracy Correct Pronunciation Compliance with Competition Rules Time Management Fair Play Both British English and American English spellings are accepted where officially recognised. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (SOED) serves as the Championship's principal reference.

Officiating Panel

Every Championship event is supervised by an independent Officiating Panel.

Primary Pronouncer

Responsible for:

  • Pronouncing competition words
  • Giving definitions
  • Providing example sentences
  • Explaining word origins
  • Clarifying homonyms
  • Providing alternate pronunciations

Adjudicator

Responsible for:

  • Monitoring fairness
  • Confirming correct spellings
  • Resolving disputes
  • Managing time limits
  • Confirming eliminations

The Adjudicator's decision is final.


Programme Director

Responsible for:

  • Opening the Championship
  • Coordinating event proceedings
  • Introducing contestants and officials
  • Explaining competition procedures
  • Ensuring smooth event management

Important Notes

Please note the following:

  • Registration fees are non-refundable except where determined by the Organising Committee.
  • The Organising Committee may amend rules where necessary to improve the Championship.
  • All participants are expected to maintain good conduct throughout the competition.
  • Unsportsmanlike behaviour may result in disqualification.
  • Schools are responsible for ensuring contestants arrive at competition venues on time.
